Thanks to the Detroit Housing Commission, 19 acres of land adjacent to Chandler Park is in the process of being ground-leased to Turner Agassi Charter School Finance Fund, which – in partnership with Eastside Community Network and the Charter School Board - will develop a new 9-12 Charter School expected to open in September of 2017, managed by a national operator that has already obtained its charter from Grand Valley State University; and a K-8 school managed by another national operator, with an expected opening in 2019.

The location of the school, adjacent to the Conner Creek Greenway, a community garden and a small wetland, creates a tremendous opportunity to generate a living laboratory that allows students to study the environment, practice environmentally sound methods, and ultimately choose careers in the conservation and environmental sciences.

During 2016, the Conservancy will be working closely with Turner Agassi and the charter school operator to a) support the ground lease negotiations to obtain control of the site, b) support the charter operator in helping the community get acquainted with the school, c) partner with the operator in marketing the school and enrolling 300-400 students and d) provide input on the design of the school building to assure some “green” amenities and to help the operator understand the importance of creating  culturally competent and special environmental curriculum within the school.
